DANVILLE, IL (Chambana Today) – A routine traffic stop early Friday morning led to the arrest of a rural Oakwood man on multiple charges, including illegal possession of a loaded handgun. At approximately 12:15 a.m. on December 27, a Danville Police Officer pulled over a vehicle in the 500 block of North Gilbert Street for failing to turn on its headlights.
Upon making contact with the driver, identified as 28-year-old Kyle A. Smith of rural Oakwood, officers observed what they believed to be illegal contraband inside the vehicle. As officers proceeded with the investigation, Smith reportedly refused to cooperate and physically resisted them. Further searching of the vehicle led to the discovery of a loaded handgun in Smith’s possession.
Smith was arrested and booked at the Vermilion County Public Safety Building on charges of Aggravated Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Adult Use Cannabis, and Obstructing/Resisting a Peace Officer.
The Danville Police Department reminded the public that an arrest is only an accusation, and all individuals are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
