DANVILLE, IL (Chambana Today) – A 42-year-old Danville man is in custody after leading police on a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle before fleeing on foot and attempting to hide from officers.
On Sunday, June 15, at approximately 8:00 p.m., a Danville Police Officer observed a stolen vehicle in the 100 block of North Bowman Avenue. The officer conducted a traffic stop in a nearby business parking lot, where initial contact was made with the driver. However, the suspect quickly fled the scene at a high rate of speed.
Thanks to help from alert community members who reported the erratic driving, Danville patrol officers were able to relocate the stolen vehicle, which had been abandoned in the 600 block of Dearborn Street.
Witnesses further assisted by providing the direction the driver had fled on foot. A Danville Police Department K9 unit was deployed to track the suspect. The K9 successfully located the man hiding in dense brush approximately four blocks away from the vehicle.
The suspect was arrested and identified as Alejandro Cardoza, 42, of Danville. He was transported to the Vermilion County Jail and booked on multiple charges, including Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Driving with a Suspended License, Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding, Obstructing/Resisting a Peace Officer, and Criminal Damage to Property.
The Danville Police Department praised the community for its vital role in the arrest. “This dangerous subject was apprehended through the teamwork of officers and the support of our community and witnesses,” said a department spokesperson.
