MAHOMET, IL (Chambana Today) – The Village of Mahomet has appointed David Smysor as its next Chief of Police, effective October 1, following the retirement of longtime Chief Mike Metzler on September 30. Metzler concludes a law enforcement career spanning over 40 years, including 14 years as Mahomet’s chief.
Smysor, a 24-year veteran of law enforcement, currently serves as Deputy Chief of Police in Urbana. His career began in 2001 and includes roles such as detective, sergeant, and lieutenant. A Mahomet resident, he holds a degree from Western Illinois University, is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, and has military experience with the Illinois National Guard.
Citing his commitment to community-focused policing and strategic leadership, Smysor expressed his readiness to serve the Mahomet community. Village President Jason Tompkins praised Smysor’s qualifications, expressing confidence in his leadership.
Smysor will begin transitioning into the role on September 1, working alongside Chief Metzler to ensure continuity. The selection followed a search process that began in May and was led by Arndt Municipal Support Inc.
