CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Early Saturday, June 1, 2024, at 1:43 a.m., the Champaign Police Department (CPD) dispatched officers to the 100 block of S. Mattis Ave. following a report of a shooting incident with injuries.

Upon arrival, officers say they discovered a 30-year-old male victim from Champaign suffering from multiple potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds. Immediate medical aid was given by officers and personnel from the Champaign Fire Department. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital. He remains hospitalized in stable condition. Additionally, a second victim, a 24-year-old male from Champaign, arrived at an area hospital shortly after with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the torso. After receiving medical treatment for his injuries, he was subsequently released.

According to CPD, the initial investigation indicates that the victims were in the parking lot of a business near the intersection of Mattis and University when shots were fired, striking both men. The victims then fled the scene to seek help. At this time, CPD say they have limited information regarding the cause of the incident or the individual/individuals responsible. Officers continue to canvass the surrounding area for witnesses and video footage that may assist in the investigation. Residents or businesses in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems are encouraged to notify the police department. No arrests have been made at this time, and the investigation is ongoing. Future updates will be provided by the CPD as they become available.
