URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) – At approximately 05:41 a.m. Monday morning, the Urbana Fire Department responded to a fire alarm activation at 1202 E. Harding Dr., a six-story building. Upon arrival, Engine 252 reported heavy smoke billowing from the fifth floor and declared the situation a working fire. A second alarm was promptly called for additional resources, with C220 arriving on scene shortly after.
Fire crews located a blaze in a trash container on the building’s first floor, which had spread up the trash chute to the second floor. The building’s sprinkler system activated on the second floor, preventing the fire from spreading beyond the trash room. Approximately 55 residents from the building’s upper five floors were evacuated by fire personnel from the Urbana and Champaign Fire Departments. The fire was under control within 30 minutes of the first engine’s arrival. No injuries were reported, and no residents were displaced. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, the damage estimates have yet to be determined.
