CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – A rainy weekend turned into a flooded one, causing flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings to be issued for parts of Champaign and Piatt counties by the National Weather Service (NWS).
Flooding in Mattoon and Champaign has been reported, with drains in downtown Champaign and portions of Bradley Avenue recommended to be avoided due to high waters.
Earlier in the day, a severe thunderstorm warning for the two counties was issued by the NWS until 6:30 p.m. Sightings of funnel clouds were accompanied by flurries of thunder and lightning.
While the severe thunderstorm warning has since been lifted, a flash flood warning was issued for Champaign and Piatt counties.
The NWS issued a flood watch until 1 p.m. on Sunday for Champaign, McLean, Sangamon, and Tazewell counties. A flash flood warning was issued for Champaign and Piatt Counties until 9:45 p.m. on Saturday.
