URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) – Urbana High School (UHS) officials arrested 24-year-old Malique Hyde at the school Thursday after allegedly observing him carrying a firearm. Hyde, a former UHS student, entered the school on November 14 shortly after dismissal requesting to visit the main office to order transcripts. UHS officials indicated that the metal detectors were turned off after school hours, as is common practice, except for after hour school events. While he was initially allowed to proceed to the office, administrators later observed him in other areas of the building, where he provided varying explanations for his presence.
As school administrators escorted him towards the exit, one noticed what appeared to be a handgun in Hyde’s pocket. Hyde then exited the building, and the administrator notified the Urbana Police Department. Approximately 20 minutes after the incident, Urbana officers located Hyde on a bicycle near the intersection of Kinch Street and Rainbow View Drive. Officers then confronted Hyde in the 1000 block of Kinch, where he physically resisted efforts to take him into custody. During this interaction, an Urbana officer sustained a wrist injury requiring medical treatment. No weapon
was recovered during the investigation.
Hyde was subsequently transported to the Champaign County Satellite Jail, where he now faces charges of aggravated resisting arrest and unlawful use of a weapon. Urbana Police ask that anyone who has additional information or video footage of the incident please contact police at 217-384-2320. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous may also submit tips to Crime Stoppers at 217-373-8477 (TIPS).
