CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – As other area school districts wrap up their summer meal offerings, the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD) is stepping up to ensure local children don’t go hungry. Starting Friday, July 25, CUPHD will host the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), providing free breakfast and lunch for children aged one to 18 through Monday, August 11.
The program, sponsored by the Illinois State Board of Education, aims to bridge the nutrition gap for children during the summer months when school is out and other meal programs are not available.
Meals will be served Monday through Friday in the CUPHD lobby at 201 West Kenyon Road in Champaign. Breakfast will be available from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and lunch will be served from 12:45 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. No registration or paperwork is required, and all meals must be consumed on-site.
“This program is essential,” said Brandon Meline, director of Maternal and Child Health. “Many children rely on school meals for proper nutrition, and summer can be a difficult time for families. We’re pleased to help meet this need.”
CUPHD Administrator Julie Pryde highlighted the additional amenities available for families. “This is our 16th year offering SFSP, and we’re proud to provide more than just meals. Kids and families can enjoy free books, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and even Disney+ while they eat.”
The program ensures equal access to all children, with no discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability. Complaints of discrimination can be filed with the USDA using their official form (AD-3027), available both online and at USDA offices.
