CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Girl Scouts of Central Illinois (GSCI) is preparing to welcome hundreds of girls to its annual summer camp program, set to begin June 8 and run through August 1. With more than 60 sessions across three central Illinois locations—Camp Kiwanis in Mahomet, Camp Tapawingo in Metamora, and Camp Widjiwagan in Springfield—the camp offers a wide range of experiences, from canoeing and archery to horseback riding and high ropes courses.

Open to all girls, regardless of prior Girl Scout membership, the summer program is designed to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and encourage independence in a supportive, girl-led environment. “Girl Scouts has always been focused on female empowerment, and our summer camp program is no exception,” said Sara Tate, GSCI Director of Programs & Camp. “Whether a girl is sleeping away from her family for the first time, riding a horse, or shooting a bow and arrow, the memories and confidence she gains help shape who she’ll become.”

Camp Options Include:

  • Camp Kiwanis (Mahomet): A 55-acre day camp for grades 1–5, located near Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve. Activities include environmental education, canoeing, and archery.
  • Camp Tapawingo (Metamora): Offers day camp (grades 1–6), equestrian camp (grades 4–12), and overnight camp (grades 1–12) on 640 scenic acres. Highlights include state-of-the-art stables, adventure courses, hiking trails, and an in-ground pool.
  • Camp Widjiwagan (Springfield): Hosts additional day camp programs for younger campers.

All camps are accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA), and Camp Tapawingo’s equestrian program is recognized by the Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA). GSCI maintains a strong commitment to accessibility, offering flexible pricing and scholarships to ensure every girl can participate, regardless of household income.
