URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) – The family of a young woman killed in a hit-and-run crash in Urbana was in the courtroom hearing of 29-year-old Julio Bol on Wednesday. Bol is accused of killing their daughter, 20-year-old Katie Abraham, in a crash after consuming a large amount of alcohol, and then fleeing the scene. Joe and Michelle Abraham arrived in Urbana on Wednesday, marking exactly one month since the tragic accident that also claimed the life of their daughter, along with 21-year-old Chloe Polzin.
Bol allegedly rear-ended the victims’ car at an Urbana intersection on January 19, causing the crash. He was arrested three days later on a bus headed to Mexico with falsified documents. Bol’s arraignment had been delayed on Tuesday, due to a translator mix-up.
The rescheduled arraignment on Wednesday featured a new interpreter, allowing the court proceedings to proceed. During the hearing, Champaign County State’s Attorney Julia Rietz shared new details about the events leading up to the crash. GPS data from Bol’s phone indicated he had been drinking at three bars the night before and the day of the crash, including mixed drinks and buckets of beer. Rietz explained that a “bucket of beer” consists of six beers.
According to police, Bol had been with a friend who lived with him in Urbana, but at the third bar, Bol allegedly struck the friend in the face and was escorted out by security. Surveillance footage from the bar shows Bol getting into his car at 1:52 a.m. The GPS data shows he arrived at the crash site just two minutes later.
Bol now faces multiple felony charges, including two counts of failure to report a crash resulting in death, one count of aggravated DUI, two counts of reckless homicide, and one count of failure to report a crash resulting in injury. If convicted, Bol could face more than 20 years in prison. The judge ordered pre-trial detention for Bol, meaning he will remain in jail as the case moves forward.
