CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – A sudden downpour Monday afternoon dropped more than three inches of rain across Champaign-Urbana, prompting a flood advisory and causing street flooding and stranded vehicles throughout the area.
According to the Champaign County Emergency Management Agency, the storm hit around 2 p.m., overwhelming drainage systems and flooding low-lying areas. Streets affected included Bradley and Prospect Avenues, Parkland Way between Mattis Avenue and Perimeter Road, and County Fair Drive. Multiple vehicles stalled in standing water, requiring assistance.
One vehicle, a Tesla, hydroplaned near the I-57/I-74 interchange and ended up in a ditch. Illinois State Police reported no injuries.
Due to high water, all evening programs scheduled at Dodds Park were canceled. Officials are reminding residents never to drive around barricades or through flooded streets, as most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles.
