URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) – Homelessness in Champaign County is on the rise, according to the latest Point-in-Time (PIT) Count conducted in January 2025. The count identified 355 individuals experiencing homelessness, an increase of 76 people from the same count in 2024. The number of homeless households also increased by 63.
Of those counted, 56 individuals were unsheltered, 169 were in emergency shelters, and 130 were in transitional housing. The number of homeless minors under age 18 rose from 64 in 2024 to 75 in 2025, signaling growing concerns for youth homelessness in the area.
“This year’s increase in the number of individuals experiencing homelessness in Champaign County underscores the urgent need for continued investment in housing solutions, supportive services, and community collaboration,” said John Ruffin, Chair of the Champaign County Continuum of Services Providers to the Homeless (CSPH). “These numbers are not just statistics—they reflect real people, real families, and real needs in our community.”
The PIT count is a federally required annual census led by HUD and coordinated locally by CSPH. More than 40 volunteers helped locate and survey people experiencing homelessness on January 22, 2025, using a “blitz-style” approach across known areas in the county.
CSPH Coordinator Katie Harmon cited rising housing costs and limited affordable housing options as key drivers of the local increase. “We are grateful for all our CSPH partners and their work in addressing homelessness in Champaign County and serving those in need,” Harmon said.
Alongside the PIT count, the Housing Inventory Count (HIC) was also completed, helping CSPH track the capacity of housing projects specifically designated for people experiencing homelessness. The data helps inform local and federal strategies to improve housing access and reduce homelessness.
CSPH continues to advocate for expanded shelter services, affordable housing development, and long-term solutions to ensure everyone in Champaign County has access to safe, stable housing.
