SPRINGFIELD, IL (Chambana Today) – The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) announced that it will begin accepting and processing 2024 tax returns today, Monday, January 27, coinciding with the start of the federal income tax filing season.
This year, Illinois will participate in the IRS Direct File program, allowing eligible taxpayers to file their federal returns directly with the IRS for free. Additionally, they will be able to easily transfer their federal tax information into IDOR’s online account management platform, MyTax Illinois, to file their state taxes at no cost. Both platforms are designed to be fast, secure, and mobile-friendly.
IDOR Director David Harris emphasized the advantages of the IRS Direct File program. “It offers free federal tax return filing, step-by-step guidance, and real-time online support,” Harris said. “Eligible taxpayers can then use the verified Direct File information to file their state taxes for free, saving time and reducing the chance of errors.”
Taxpayers are encouraged to file early and choose direct deposit for the fastest processing of refunds. Those who file electronically without errors can expect to receive their refund within approximately four weeks. Paper filing or filing through tax-prep software or a professional is also an option.
The deadline to file tax returns is Tuesday, April 15. Taxpayers can request a six-month extension, but any taxes owed must still be paid by the original due date.
In addition to free filing through MyTax Illinois, the site allows users to make payments, respond to inquiries, check refund statuses with “Where’s My Refund?”, and access other helpful features. Taxpayers needing assistance can call 1-800-732-8866 or 217-782-3336. Free language assistance is available for those with Limited English Proficiency.
