Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza (pictured) will not run for re-election. She made the announcement Wednesday morning in Chicago.
Mendoza, who has run for mayor of Chicago in the past, could do so again in 2027. “Moving forward, I am going to figure out what the right move is for our family, our city, and our state, and find out where I am needed most.”
Saying the city must do better, Mendoza responded to a question about City Hall: “Chicago is in dire need of competency; (it needs as mayor) someone who understands the needs of the city. I think that we’ve had two very unsuccessful mayors in a row,” referring to incumbent Brandon Johnson and predecessor Lori Lightfoot.
Mendoza, who will leave office after having served ten years as the state’s check-writer-in-chief, has also served as Chicago city clerk and as a state representative.
