CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The Illinois football program is mourning the loss of long-time college football coach and former Kansas State All-American offensive tackle Dana Dimel, who passed away Tuesday at the age of 62.

Dimel, a 35-year veteran of the coaching profession, made a significant impact on the sport. He most recently served as Senior Offensive Assistant for the Illinois Fighting Illini, helping guide the team to a strong 9-3 record during the 2024 season.

In a statement, Illinois head coach Bret Bielema expressed deep sadness over Dimel’s passing. “Dana was an exceptional person, husband, father, friend, and football coach,” Bielema said. “His influence on our program was incredible to witness and be a part of. His infectious positive energy had a major impact on me, our players, and everyone in our building every day. He will be dearly missed.”

Dimel’s storied career began at Kansas State University, where he was an All-American offensive tackle from 1984 to 1986. After signing as a free agent with the Minnesota Vikings in 1987, he transitioned into coaching, joining legendary coach Bill Snyder’s staff at Kansas State.

Dimel’s career extended beyond Kansas State, with head coaching roles at Wyoming (1997–1999), Houston (2000–2002), and UTEP (2018–2023). From 2011 to 2017, he was the most successful offensive coordinator in college football, accumulating 61 wins and helping his teams appear in eight consecutive bowl games. Over his career, Dimel mentored 37 players who went on to play in the NFL.

A Columbus, Ohio native, Dimel earned his degree in marketing from Kansas State in 1986. His son, Winston Dimel, followed in his footsteps as a three-time All-Big 12 fullback for the Wildcats before transferring to UTEP to play under his father in 2018. Dimel is survived by his wife, Julie, and children, Winston and Josey.

The Illinois football program and the wider college football community remember Dimel not only for his accomplishments on the field but also for his dedication to his players and his positive impact on those around him. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
