SPRINGFIELD, IL (Chambana Today) – April marks Hazardous Materials Safety Month, a time when the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS) emphasizes public awareness around chemical safety. Illinois continues to see a rise in active Tier 2 chemical facilities, adding over 100 new sites annually.
According to IEMA-OHS Interim Director Adnan Khayyat, the agency tracks more than 9,000 active facilities and monitors chemical storage, spills, and releases across the state. “These chemicals are commonly used in households and industries—everything from detergents to fuels and medications,” said Khayyat. “It’s critical that residents are informed and that emergency preparedness is taken seriously.”
To support this effort, IEMA collaborates with Local Emergency Planning Committees (LEPCs), first responders, and the Illinois Fire Service Institute (ISFI) to provide training and public information campaigns. More than 8,800 chemical facilities are under observation, and specialized training is available statewide to ensure readiness.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) also provide guidelines for handling household chemicals safely:
- Always follow label directions for use and storage.
- Avoid mixing products to prevent hazardous reactions.
- Keep chemicals in original containers and away from fire sources.
- Use proper storage techniques, including safety locks and secure shelving.
- Wear protective gear like gloves or goggles during use.
