CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Efrem Winters, a legend in Illinois basketball during the 1980s, has passed away at the age of 61 following a prolonged battle with illness. Winters, known for his slam dunks and dominant presence in the post, played a pivotal role in restoring Illinois to national prominence under Coach Lou Henson.
A McDonald’s All-American out of Chicago King High School, Winters joined a talented 1982 recruiting class that helped build the foundation for a successful run for the Fighting Illini. During his four-year career (1983-1986), Winters started in 120 games, leading the team to a 95-35 record, four consecutive 20-win seasons, and NCAA Tournament appearances. A first-team All-Big Ten selection in 1984, he was instrumental in the team’s Big Ten title and Elite Eight appearance that same year.
Winters left his mark as Illinois’ all-time rebounding leader and No. 3 scorer, with 853 rebounds and 1,487 points. After college, he was selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the fourth round of the 1986 NBA Draft.
