SPRINGFIELD, IL (Chambana Today) – The Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) is set to distribute more than $679,000 in federal funding over the next three years to bolster the state’s specialty crop industry, with a focus on supporting small, new, veteran, and underserved farmers and communities.

The funding comes through the USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant program, which aims to expand access to fresh, locally grown produce and enhance the competitiveness of fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, and other specialty crops. The IDOA is now accepting applications for the grant, which must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on June 23, 2025. All funded projects must begin in calendar year 2026.

Eligible applicants include non-profit organizations, local and government entities, trade and commodity associations, and colleges and universities. Proposed projects must benefit the broader specialty crop industry and cannot be tailored to profit a single business or individual.

“Illinois’ specialty crop industry is robust, providing diverse opportunities statewide,” said Jerry Costello II, Director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture. “These grant funds help fuel innovation in research and education, while also opening doors for students, small farms, and underrepresented growers.”

Project proposals should address key industry priorities such as:

  • Enhancing food safety and compliance with the Food Safety Modernization Act
  • Investing in organic crop growth and improved seed varieties
  • Boosting child and adult nutrition awareness
  • Promoting sustainable agriculture and conservation-focused research
  • Improving pest control and reducing costs in distribution chains

Illinois is home to more than 3,200 specialty crop producers, managing over 83,000 acres and generating nearly $500 million in annual sales. The state ranks first nationally in pumpkin and horseradish production and is a top ten producer of asparagus, herbs, peas, and other crops.

The IDOA encourages interested parties to explore the full grant guidelines and application materials available on its official website. Additional questions can be directed to AGR.ISCBG@illinois.gov.

For those involved in farmers’ markets, roadside stands, or community-sponsored agriculture (CSA) programs, officials recommend applying through the USDA’s Farmers’ Market and Local Food Promotion Program instead.
