CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer is returning to the Fighting Illini for the 2025 season. Altmyer made the announcement Saturday in front of a sellout crowd at State Farm Center during the Illinois men’s basketball game against top-ranked Tennessee.
The Starkville, Mississippi, native has been instrumental in Illinois’ historic 2024 season. The No. 20 Illini secured nine wins, spent 11 weeks in the AP Top 25, and earned a program-record four consecutive rankings from the College Football Playoff committee. Altmyer threw for 2,543 yards, 21 touchdowns, and just five interceptions, earning national recognition from the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm and Davey O’Brien awards.
The Illini aim for their 10th win, which would tie a program record, when they face No. 15 South Carolina in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. Altmyer’s clutch performances have defined his career, with five game-winning drives in his two seasons, including three this year alone.
