CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Illinois State Police (ISP) Troop 7 will conduct Nighttime Enforcement (NITE) patrols in Macon and Vermilion Counties throughout April, focusing on reducing impaired driving and ensuring seatbelt use during the critical hours of 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

With nighttime driving linked to a significantly higher number of fatalities—particularly among unrestrained drivers—the NITE patrols aim to reduce traffic deaths, which are compounded by impaired driving. ISP officers will be vigilant for impaired drivers, improper seatbelt and child restraint use, speeding, distracted driving, and other violations of the Illinois Vehicle Code.

Alcohol and drug impairment contribute to over 47% of all fatal crashes in Illinois, and more than half of fatal accidents occur after dark. The NITE program is an essential initiative to keep impaired drivers off the road and ensure drivers and passengers are properly restrained. This program is funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
