CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – As thousands of Illinoisans hit the roads for the Independence Day holiday, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced a temporary suspension of non-emergency lane closures to ease traffic congestion. However, several significant construction zones will remain active in District 5 through the long weekend.

The suspension begins at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 6. Despite this, IDOT cautions that ongoing projects in District 5—including parts of I-57, I-72, and I-74—will still impact traffic.

In Champaign County, the westbound I-74 ramp to southbound I-57 remains closed, and lane reductions continue along I-72 just west of the I-57 interchange. In Douglas County, I-57 is narrowed from U.S. 36 in Tuscola heading 10 miles south. McLean and Vermilion counties also see active work zones, including lane reductions on I-74 near Bloomington and Tilton, as well as ramp closures at I-55 and Oakwood Road.

IDOT urges drivers to remain vigilant in work zones, obey posted speed limits, and never drive distracted or impaired. The agency also reminds the public that more than 3,200 miles of highway are being improved under Rebuild Illinois, a $33.2 billion statewide infrastructure initiative.
