CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – In the late hours of Thursday night heading into Friday, a tragic shooting occurred in Champaign, opening an investigation into a homicide.

Champaign Police were dispatched to the 1900 block of West Bradley Avenue after receiving reports of a shooting with injuries at 12:36 a.m. on July 4. As officers were searching the area for evidence of gunfire, a 32-year-old Champaign man arrived at an area hospital by personal transport. The man was in critical condition and immediately received surgery, but tragically succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation indicates that the man was outside of a business nearby when multiple shots were fired. The person or persons responsible for the gunfire fled the area, and the victim was then transported the hospital. Damage to several nearby vehicles has also been reported.

Officers are continuing to canvass the surrounding area for witnesses and video footage that may assist in the investigation. Residents or businesses in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems are encouraged to notify the police department. At this time, no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing. Future updates will be made as they become available.
