BERWYN, IL (Chambana Today) – The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the man suspected of killing three people in Mahomet on Wednesday night. He has been named as 24-year-old John R. Lyons of Westchester, Illinois.
The investigations into both the Mahomet homicides and the subsequent police shooting in Berwyn remain ongoing.
According to officials from the Berwyn Police Department, Lyons was involved in a deadly shootout with officers in the Chicago suburb on Wednesday evening. At approximately 11:38 p.m., police responded to reports of an armed man. Upon arrival, Lyons fled on foot but later forced his way into a nearby residence where he fatally shot two dogs.

Officers continued to pursue him, but when they ordered him to stop, Lyons fired at the police. In response, officers returned fire, killing him at the scene. Fortunately, no officers were injured during the confrontation.
Berwyn Police said initial reports suggest that Lyons was the same suspect wanted in connection to the triple homicide in Mahomet earlier that evening.
As is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, the Illinois State Police has taken over the investigation. Authorities are currently reviewing the details surrounding both the Berwyn shooting and the Mahomet killings.
More information will be released as investigations continue.
