MAHOMET, IL (Chambana Today) – As the Mahomet-Seymour School District prepares for the upcoming school year, new measures are being taken to address overcrowding and enhance security at the junior high.
A third portable classroom has been added to the junior high campus, just outside the main building. The addition comes as enrollment is expected to slightly increase this fall, continuing a trend of crowding that district officials say has become a pressing issue.
“This was necessary due to continued classroom space issues and the recent failed referendum,” said Superintendent Kenny Lee. The district’s $113 million bond proposal—which would have funded a new junior high building—was rejected by voters in November 2024.
Each portable holds two classrooms. The newest building will bring immediate relief to the growing student body while long-term solutions remain in discussion.
In addition to added learning space, construction is also underway to upgrade the school’s front entrance, which will now feature a buzz-in system and surveillance cameras. The district expects all security improvements to be completed before the first day of school.
