CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced that the newly constructed ramp from northbound Interstate 57 to westbound I-74 will open to traffic tonight, May 5, at approximately 9 p.m. The ramp is a key component of the ongoing I-57/74 interchange reconstruction project aimed at modernizing one of Central Illinois’ busiest corridors.
As part of the next phase of the project, the ramps from northbound I-57 to eastbound I-74 and from eastbound I-74 to Prospect Avenue will close tonight for approximately one month. These closures will allow construction crews to complete pavement connections and continue upgrading infrastructure in the area.
Motorists traveling through the work zone should plan for delays and consider alternate routes when possible. IDOT reminds drivers to obey posted speed limits, stay off mobile devices, and be alert for workers and equipment in the construction zones.
The interchange improvements are part of IDOT’s broader Rebuild Illinois initiative, a $33.2 billion investment in the state’s transportation system. Over six years, the program aims to upgrade more than 3,200 miles of highway and nearly 9 million square feet of bridge deck. So far, approximately $16 billion has been invested across Illinois, improving over 6,500 miles of roads, 686 bridges, and implementing nearly 1,000 safety enhancements.
