SPRINGFIELD, IL (Chambana Today) – Workers across Illinois will benefit from several new protections and regulations that take effect on January 1, 2025.

One of the most significant changes is the increase in the state’s minimum wage. Starting in 2025, the minimum wage will rise by $1 per hour, moving from $14 to $15. Tipped workers will also see a pay boost, with their hourly wage increasing to $9. Additionally, youth workers under the age of 18 who work fewer than 650 hours per calendar year will see their hourly wage rise to $13.

Another important change is the new requirement for employers with 15 or more employees. Beginning January 1, job postings for these employers must include pay scale and benefit information. This move is aimed at increasing pay transparency and helping workers make more informed decisions when considering job opportunities.

Employers will also be required to provide pay stubs to employees each pay period, detailing hours worked, pay rates, overtime pay, and deductions from wages. Furthermore, employers must retain copies of pay stubs for a minimum of three years, regardless of whether the employee remains with the company. Both current and former employees will have the right to request copies of their pay stubs at any time.

“These laws taking effect in January put more money in the pockets of Illinois workers, increase pay transparency, and better inform workers about their hours worked, deductions, and wages,” said Jane Flanagan, Director of the Illinois Department of Labor.

In addition to the new pay regulations, the Illinois Department of Labor has updated several required workplace posters. These include posters on topics such as the “Your Rights Under Illinois Employment Laws,” the “Equal Pay Act Pay Transparency Notice,” the “Victims’ Economic Security and Safety Act,” and the “Right to Privacy in the Workplace/E-Verify” notice, among others. Employers are urged to ensure these updated posters are displayed in their workplaces to keep employees informed of their rights.
