DANVILLE, Ill. (Chambana Today) — OSF HealthCare Bobette Steely Hegeler Cancer Center in Danville is expanding its services beyond cancer treatment by offering low-dose radiotherapy to patients with osteoarthritis and other inflammatory and degenerative conditions.
The center recently began providing low-dose radiotherapy, or LDRT, as a noninvasive option for people experiencing chronic pain and stiffness in joints, tendons and soft tissues. The treatment is designed for patients who have not found relief through other therapies but are not ready or able to undergo surgery.
Dr. Edie Krueger, a radiation oncologist at the Hegeler Cancer Center, said LDRT can significantly reduce pain and inflammation while helping patients maintain mobility and quality of life.
“People who have tried other treatments but are not ready for surgery are great candidates for LDRT,” Krueger said. “This is a safe, effective and noninvasive treatment that can significantly reduce pain and stiffness, possibly avoiding the need for surgery.”
Each LDRT session lasts about 15 minutes, with most patients receiving six treatments over a two-week period. Patients typically return after three months for a follow-up evaluation, and additional treatments may be recommended if needed.
The therapy is delivered using the center’s TrueBeam linear accelerator, which was installed in 2022. The technology allows physicians to deliver precise doses of radiation, creating a safer, quicker and more comfortable experience for patients.
OSF HealthCare officials say the addition of LDRT reflects the cancer center’s growing role in providing advanced treatment options for a wider range of medical conditions in the Danville area.
