CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — Parkland College’s Child Development Center (CDC) is leading a holiday food, toy, and clothing drive this month to assist single student-parents and their families. The effort will culminate in a free outreach and resource fair on Saturday, November 22.
Students, staff, and community members are encouraged to drop off donations in the CDC lobby through November 30. Requested items include nonperishable foods such as canned goods, pasta, cereal, peanut butter, and rice; new or gently used toys, puzzles, and books for children ages 0–5; and new or gently used clothing for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. All collected items will be distributed discreetly to local families before the holidays.
The outreach event, scheduled for 9–11 a.m. in the CDC (G building), will provide single student-parents an opportunity to connect with local resources and receive supplies gathered from the drive. Registration is required and available at the CDC or Parkland Student Life in room U111.
“I’m excited to offer Parkland’s single-parent students a stress-free, welcoming event that connects them with resources and supports to help their families thrive,” said CDC Director Jennifer Somers. “We want them to know that community support is available to help them achieve their goals.”
The event is being held in partnership with several local organizations and campus groups, including Parkland Student Life, Wesley Food Pantry, Parkland’s LPN and Dental Programs, CCRS, SNAP, Crisis Nursery, TAP, and the University of Illinois.
“My hope is to inspire these students to continue their education with the confidence that they have support in both their academic journey and their parenting responsibilities,” Somers added.
