CHAMPAIGN COUNTY IL (Chambana Today) – Peace Officers Memorial Day will be observed on Thursday, May 15th, as part of National Police Week, to honor law enforcement officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty.

The Champaign Police Memorial Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 13, at 9:00 a.m.at West Side Park (400 W. University Ave., Champaign). It will honor law enforcement officers from around the world who have died in the line of duty and pay special tribute to Champaign Police Officers who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our community. The three heroes to be honored by the Champaign Police Department are Thomas Dodsworth (end of watch July 6, 1913), Robert Tatman (end of watch November 25, 1967), and Christopher Oberheim (end of watch May 19, 2021).

Held annually on May 15, the day serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by peace officers across the country. Much like Memorial Day honors fallen military personnel, Peace Officers Memorial Day recognizes the courage and service of police officers who gave their lives to protect their communities.

Ceremonies are expected across the nation—including flag-lowering events, memorial services, and moments of silence—to pay tribute to those who have died while upholding public safety. Communities are encouraged to reflect on the dedication of law enforcement personnel and show appreciation for the officers who continue to serve.
