SPRINGFIELD, IL (Chambana Today) – Governor JB Pritzker on Friday gave a major early boost to Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton’s U.S. Senate campaign, formally endorsing his longtime running mate less than 24 hours after Senator Dick Durbin announced his retirement.
Speaking outside Bright Star Church in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood, Pritzker praised Stratton’s leadership and toughness, calling her “a senator who will never cower when the moment calls for courage.”
“She’s been my partner in governance while we’ve achieved great things in Illinois,” Pritzker said. “I know she’s ready for the fight ahead.”
Stratton, a South Side native and former state representative, officially launched her campaign Thursday, making her the first candidate to enter what’s expected to be a fiercely contested Democratic primary. The governor’s endorsement could help Stratton consolidate early support and signal significant financial firepower — even though Pritzker has not yet pledged any specific funding.
“I am so grateful to be standing here alongside my friend, JB,” Stratton said. “That’s the same fight I’m going to bring to the Senate.”
Stratton has not yet formed a federal campaign committee but launched a political action committee earlier this year to lay the groundwork for her run.
Meanwhile, the field of potential Democratic challengers is rapidly forming. U.S. Representatives Robin Kelly, Raja Krishnamoorthi — who already has a $19 million war chest — and Lauren Underwood are all reportedly considering bids. Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs and former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel are also seen as possible contenders.
As Democrats prepare for a significant reshuffling of power in Illinois, eyes are also on Pritzker’s next move. With speculation swirling around a possible 2028 presidential run, the governor has yet to say if he’ll seek a third term — but if he does, he’ll need a new running mate to join him in Springfield.
