CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and Chambana Today’s sister radio station Extra 96.9 is gearing up for an electrifying event that promises to rock the night away for a noble cause.
Breast Cancer Dollars & Coins (BC/DC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting breast cancer research, is set to host what they say will be a high-energy rock concert at the Virginia Theatre. Scheduled for Saturday, October 26, from 6-11 p.m., this event will raise funds with all net proceeds benefitting the Mills Breast Cancer Institute and donations going to the Carle Health Center for Philanthropy.
Get ready for a night to remember
With a mission as vital as raising funds and awareness for breast cancer research, BC/DC has enlisted the help of the tribute band, Head First. Known for their dynamic performances and masterful renditions of classic rock hits from the late ’70s and ’80s, Head First is set to light up the stage and captivate the audience. The concert is not just about the music – it’s about making a significant impact on the fight against breast cancer.
Meet the real people at the root of the cause
The genesis of BC/DC’s rock concert lies in the inspiring journey of Kim Schmidt, a breast cancer survivor who received her diagnosis when she was just 18 years old. Her challenging path ignited a passion to help others affected by the disease. Partnering with Randy Brown from Head First, who now serves as BC/DC’s President, Schmidt, acting as Treasurer, spearheaded this initiative. Together, they aim to shine a spotlight on breast cancer, which affects one in eight women in the United States.
Why breast cancer awareness matters
The American Cancer Society (ACS)reveals that breast cancer predominantly strikes middle-aged or older women, with the median age at diagnosis being 62. While the occurrence is smaller in women under 45, ACS says that it remains a critical health issue. Early detection and treatment are extremely important. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer treatments in high-income nations often result in survival rates of 90% or higher. However, these figures starkly contrast with the approximately 40% survival rates that WHO says is seen in lower-income countries where medical resources and screening processes are scarce. This breakdown underscores the urgent need for improved healthcare access globally.
The power of music and community
Merchandise sales during the event will further contribute to the fundraising efforts, with a collective goal of $50,000 by the night’s end. The concert offers an opportunity for individuals and local businesses to come together, support a cause that affects many, and enjoy a night filled with music and friendship.
Support BC/DC and help save lives
Supporting BC/DC is a direct way to contribute to the ongoing battle against breast cancer. The funds raised will play a pivotal role in advancing research, supporting patients, and helping healthcare providers offer the best care possible. Events like this are crucial in raising not only funds but also awareness about breast cancer’s far-reaching impact.
