URBANA, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The Cunningham Children’s Home in Urbana, with over 130 years of dedicated service to youth and families, invites the community to take part in their 5th annual Be a Hero 5K on Saturday, October 4th. This family-friendly event is designed not only as a fundraiser but also as a celebration of community spirit and support for young people overcoming challenges.
The 3.2-mile run/walk will take place across Cunningham’s expansive 32-acre campus, offering participants a scenic route through historic and modern parts of the facility. The event kicks off at 9 a.m., with registration opening earlier at 8:30 a.m. Runners, walkers, and volunteers of all ages are welcome to join the fun.
Colleen Combes, Cunningham’s event and volunteer specialist, emphasized the importance of community involvement. “Our youth need to see that there are heroes in their lives—people who care and support them as they set goals and build a brighter future,” she said. “Whether you run, walk, cheer, or donate, you become part of this hero alliance.”

Participants who raise $100 or more will receive a special Cunningham superhero cape to honor their commitment. The event also features a kids zone, balloon artists, and the beloved post-race donuts to reward everyone’s efforts.
Funds raised will directly support Cunningham’s vital programs, including therapy services, sensory tools for classrooms, and starter kits for youth transitioning to independent living. The event’s community spirit extends beyond the race, inspiring many youth to set and reach even bigger goals in their lives.
