CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, IL (Chambana Today) – Central Illinois is bracing for a round of severe storms expected to begin as early as late in the morning today. According to meteorologists, these storms could be strong to severe, with damaging wind gusts reaching up to 70-80 mph, large hail, and the possibility of isolated tornadoes. Nearly half of the area is now under an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe weather.

The primary concern with this system is the potential for widespread damaging winds, though all severe weather threats are on the table. A developing low-pressure system paired with abundant instability will provide the necessary ingredients for strong storm development. Supercell structures could emerge if the atmosphere fully recovers from Tuesday night’s storms—bringing a higher risk of tornadoes and other severe conditions.

Forecasters caution that exact timing and storm intensity may fluctuate as high-resolution weather models continue to update. Residents are urged to monitor forecasts closely, as the situation remains dynamic.
