CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – A large band of thunderstorms and showers is expected to move southeast across Central Illinois today.

The storms near the leading edge could cause wind gusts of 40-50 mph with one to two inches of rain. They are projected to weaken as they approach Eastern Illinois.

The National Weather Service warns drivers to be extremely cautious due to ponding of water. Ponding can occur quickly and unexpectedly, making driving risky. Here are some essential tips:

  • Avoid Flooded Areas: Never attempt to drive through flooded roads. It can be challenging to determine water depth, and your vehicle could become stuck or swept away.
  • Monitor Weather Updates: Stay updated by listening to weather reports and advisories.
  • Slow Down: Reduced speed can give you more time to react to unexpected situations.

This cluster of storms, known as the “Mesoscale Convective Systems,” are “tricky,” according to the National Weather Service. They depend on what is left from the previous storms. Tuesday’s winds will be more from the northwest, but “in any event, the main threat will be with damaging wind gusts. The tornado threat is low, but not zero,” said the National Weather Service.

Safety precautions

To effectively handle the impending severe weather, here are some safety precautions:

  • Stay Indoors: If you are at home, remain indoors and away from windows to avoid getting injured by shattered glass or flying debris.
  • Secure Outdoor Items: Bring in or secure any outdoor furniture or items that could be blown away by strong winds.
  • Emergency Supplies: Keep an emergency kit handy, including flashlights, batteries, bottled water, and non-perishable food items.
  • Communication Plan: Have a family communication plan in place to ensure everyone knows how to stay in touch.
Flood preparedness and response

Flooding is a severe risk during heavy rainfall events. Here are steps you can take to protect yourself and your property:

  • Elevate Important Items: Move essential items and documents to higher areas of your home to prevent water damage.
  • Unplug Electrical Appliances: Reducing the risk of electrical fires by unplugging appliances that are not in use.
  • Stay Informed: Reliable information is crucial. Tune into NOAA Weather Radio, websites, or local news channels for updates.
Agricultural impact

Farmers in Central Illinois should also prepare for the potential impact of these severe thunderstorms. Heavy rainfall can lead to waterlogged fields, while high winds can damage crops. Proper planning and updated weather information can help mitigate these effects.

Post-storm safety

Once the storm passes, caution is still necessary. Here are some post-storm safety tips:

  • Check for Hazards: Look out for downed power lines and structural damages.
  • Avoid Flood Water: Flood water can contain hazardous materials. Avoid contact as much as possible.
  • Photograph Damage: Document any damage to your property for insurance purposes.
