CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Champaign Police responded to a report of shots fired on the 2800 block of W. Kirby Avenue at 7:14 p.m. on March 26. Officers arrived on the scene but found no immediate injuries. However, evidence of gunfire was quickly located at the intersection of Stratford Drive and Trafalgar Square.
At 7:28 p.m., a 22-year-old Champaign man called police dispatch to report that he had been struck by gunfire. He was located at a different location, where officers and medical personnel promptly arrived. The man was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg and transported to an area hospital. He was later released after receiving medical care.
Initial findings suggest that the victim was in a parking lot when shots were fired from a vehicle, though the motive remains unclear. Police do not believe this was a random incident, and the investigation is ongoing.
Champaign Police are urging any residents or businesses in the area with exterior surveillance footage to come forward to assist in the investigation. No arrests have been made at this time.
