CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The Champaign Police Department has released new details about a shooting incident on Sunday that left one person hospitalized with gunshot wounds. Officers responded to the scene near the intersection of Third Street and Burr Oak Court just after 3 p.m. for a report of a “shooting with injuries.” Upon arrival, they found a vehicle with damage from gunfire and discovered a 31-year-old Champaign man with potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds.
The officers provided immediate medical assistance until the man was transported to a nearby hospital. He is now in stable condition, according to the Champaign Police Department. Through their investigation, officers determined that the victim had been inside the vehicle when 22-year-old Zaire Herman of Champaign opened fire, striking the victim. Herman then fled the scene on foot.
A search for Herman led police to a nearby area, where he was apprehended and arrested. Herman now faces charges including aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated assault, and unlawful use of a weapon. Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
The investigation remains ongoing, with officers canvassing the area for witnesses and video footage.
