CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – The City of Champaign has activated the sidewalk snow and ice removal ordinance for the Downtown, Midtown, and Campustown areas following a weekend snowstorm that dropped at least two inches of snow.
Property owners in these areas are required to clear their sidewalks within 48 hours of the Public Works Director’s declaration, which took effect at noon on Tuesday, January 7. Sidewalks must be cleared by 12:00 p.m. Thursday, January 9.
The ordinance mandates that sidewalks be cleared to a minimum width of 48 inches, or the width of the sidewalk, whichever is less. For corner properties, ramps must also be cleared to ensure a continuous path from block to block. Non-compliant sidewalks may be cleared by the city at the owner’s expense.
The City also reminds property owners not to place cleared snow into city streets, as it can create hazards for vehicles. Additionally, residents and businesses are encouraged to clear sidewalks along Safe Routes to School to ensure the safety of students and parents.
