The RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit Comes to Rantoul Airport

The 53′ mobile theater features the original panoramic film “Rise Above,” which documents the history of the Tuskegee Airmen. The climate-controlled exhibit accommodates 30 visitors per showing, and is accessible. Admission to the exhibit is free.

The exhibit also honors the Women Airforce Service Pilots. This group of heroic Americans exhibited tremendous bravery and determination in the face of many who felt women could not do what was then considered a man’s job. Despite the obstacles and disapproval of others, these women forged ahead and served with tremendous distinction in the U.S. Army Air Corp.

“It is an incredible honor to recognize the courage and sacrifices made by the young men of the 99th Pursuit Squadron at their original home in Hangar 4 at Chanute Field. They overcame daunting racial barriers and served admirably in WWII,” states Bob Coverdill, Village of Rantoul Airport Manager. “The Women’s Air Force Service Pilot program is often overlooked, but the women who refused to accept ‘no’ for an answer blazed the trail for future women aviators.”

In addition to the RISE ABOVE exhibit, visitors will also be able to see a P-51C Mustang. This fully restored and operational vintage aircraft was the Tuskegee Airmen’s signature fighter in WWII, complete with a unique red tail paint scheme. It is a museum without walls, sparking conversations and educating young and old alike about the often-overlooked history of the Tuskegee Airmen. The aircraft is flown in numerous air shows around the country each season, and is available for up-close viewing on static display at community events throughout the year.

“Hosting the RISE ABOVE exhibit in the same location where these men trained is an absolute honor,” says Coverdill. “We hope the community is able to come out and learn about this important history that had it’s start here in Rantoul.
