DANVILLE, IL (Chambana Today) – On Saturday evening, March 29th, just before midnight, a routine traffic stop in Danville led to the arrest of two individuals after police discovered illegal firearms and over 100 grams of cannabis.

Danville Police Officer initiated the stop in the 500 block of Clarence Street after observing a vehicle violation involving equipment and seatbelt issues. A K9 unit arrived shortly after and alerted officers to the presence of illegal items in the vehicle.

The driver, 20-year-old Amiyah N. Helton of Danville, and passenger 20-year-old Keshawn J. Cotton, also of Danville, were identified during the investigation. Cotton was found to be in possession of an illegal firearm and over 100 grams of cannabis, and another firearm was discovered during the investigation.

Both individuals were arrested and taken to the Vermilion County Public Safety Building. Helton faces charges including Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, No Valid FOID, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Endangering the Life/Health of a Child. Cotton is charged with Aggravated Use of a Weapon, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of Over 100 Grams of Cannabis, and Armed Violence.
