CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – A fight in Champaign escalated Sunday night when two teenagers were shot, one of them critically. According to Champaign Police, officers were dispatched to Burr Oak Court at 10:19 p.m. following reports of a shooting with injuries.
When they arrived, officers found a 13-year-old suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. As emergency responders prepared to transport the teen, they discovered a 15-year-old nearby with a gunshot wound to the hand. Both were taken to the hospital; the 13-year-old remains in critical condition.
This marks the third shooting incident in Champaign over the weekend, and the second to result in injuries. A Saturday shooting sent a 21-year-old to the hospital, and another incident earlier Sunday did not produce any known victims.
Preliminary investigation indicates that multiple unidentified individuals were involved in an altercation that led to the shooting. All parties fled the scene before police arrived. Officers also found bullet damage to a nearby building and vehicle.
