CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Contaminated washing and packing areas are among the leading causes of foodborne illness in fresh produce, according to the University of Illinois Extension. In an effort to reduce this risk and help community members protect themselves and others from getting sick, U of I Extension will host a free educational webinar.

Set for September 10 from 4 to 5 p.m., the webinar will offer practical strategies for preventing contamination of fruits and vegetables after harvest. The event is open to the public, but registration is required by September 3.

“The growing season is a busy time for fruit and vegetable farmers,” said Lillian Nabwiire, a U of I food safety educator. “Before we wrap up this season, let’s pause and reflect on one of the key reasons we engage in growing fruits and vegetables, which is to provide nutritious and safe food to our communities.”

Organizers stress the importance of proper post-harvest handling, whether you’re operating a large farm, a small business, or growing food in your own backyard. The webinar will equip attendees with simple, actionable guidance to reduce the risk of foodborne illness from improperly handled produce.

“This webinar focuses on protecting fresh fruits and vegetables from contamination after harvest,” Nabwiire added. “It’s an important step in safeguarding both public health and the quality of our local food systems.” Those interested can find more information and register through the University of Illinois Extension website.
