URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) – The Urbana Fire Department (UFD) kicked off National Fire Prevention Week, October 6 – 12, with the Urbana Fire Community Risk Reduction Family Day. UFD Family Day was held in the southeast parking lot of the Lincoln Square Mall.
This year’s theme of the weeklong event is “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You!” This serves as a reminder for families to have working smoke alarms in their homes to reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half. According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than one-third of home fire deaths result from fires in which no smoke alarms are present.
Kids of all ages toured the emergency and responder vehicles that were on hand as part of the Touch-a-Truck portion of the event, and the Kona Ice truck handed out free treats to kids. Attendees were able to sign-up for a free smoke detector and take pictures with UFD’s personnel and trucks.
Some of the exhibits included teaching attendees about cooking fires, how to handle them, how to get help, and how to prevent these fires from ever starting. Lastly, the UFD hosted a controlled live fire demonstration.
