CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — Firefighters from the Urbana Fire Department quickly assisted six residents to safety early this morning after responding to what was reported as a downed power line.
At around 1:42 a.m., the fire department was dispatched to the 1700 block of Fairlawn Drive. Enging 252, which was stationed on Mumford Drive, arrived within three minutes and encountered heavy smoke coming from the attached garage of a single-story residence.
Firefighters quickly confirmed a working fire, and immediately made entry into the home. They located occupants inside, and assisted six residents to safety. One occupant confirmed all residents were out, allowing crews to continue interior fire suppression operations.
Crews advanced through the residence to the attached garage, located the fire, and brought it under control while additional firefighters established a water supply, ventilated the structure, and conducted a primary search. The fire was contained within 20 minutes.
Around 25 members of the Urbana Fire Department responded and remained on scene for more than two hours to complete overhaul operations and ensure the fire was fully extinguished. No injuries were reported, though six residents were displaced as a result of the fire.
The fire department’s investigation team is investigating the cause of the fire, which remains undetermined.
The Urbana Fire Department reminds residents that working smoke detectors provide early warning and save lives. Residents are encouraged to ensure smoke alarms are installed and functioning properly.
