URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) – Urbana School District #116 is kicking off Black History Month with a special celebration on Sunday, January 26 at Dr. Preston Williams Elementary School. The event, running from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., will honor the legacy of Janice Mitchell, the district’s former Parent and Community Outreach Liaison, who was a long-time advocate for the Urbana community.

This annual celebration, now in its fourth year, provides an opportunity for the community to come together in recognition of Black history and heritage. The event will include children’s activities from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m., followed by a formal program from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.

Janice Mitchell’s dedication to the Urbana community, particularly in fostering connections between schools and families, will be recognized through heartfelt tributes. The celebration is open to the public, and attendees are encouraged to participate in honoring Mitchell’s contributions while reflecting on the significance of Black History Month.
