URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) — The City of Urbana is accepting applications for two cultural programs, with a shared deadline of April 27 at 11:59 p.m. Those interested in applying can do so at this link.
Arts Grants
The Urbana Arts & Culture Program opened its 2026 grant cycle on March 23. Funding is available across all artistic disciplines, provided the work is displayed in spaces open to the public. Eligible fields include visual arts, music, theater, dance, film, creative writing, spoken word, crafts, environmental arts, and emerging media.
Grants are offered in two tiers: Tier I awards range from $2,000 to $3,499 for individual artists and smaller initiatives; Tier II awards range from $3,500 to $4,999 for mid-sized projects. Arts education initiatives in Urbana School District 116 schools can also apply through a dedicated category now built into the Tier I application.
Applications must be submitted through the city’s Neighborly Portal. Late submissions will not be accepted. A tutorial is available on YouTube.
Poet Laureate
The city has extended its Poet Laureate application deadline to April 27. The position serves as a community cultural ambassador, with duties including readings, workshops, and public engagement programs.
Applicants must be at least 21 years old, have lived in Champaign County for at least one year, and be active as a performing, published, or editorially recognized poet. A demonstrated commitment to the community is also required.
Dr. Rachel Lauren Storm is currently serving as interim Arts & Culture Coordinator overseeing both programs. She can be reached at Rachel.Storm@UrbanaIL.gov.
