COLES/DOUGLAS COUNTIES (Chambana Today) — A travel advisory was issued for Coles and Douglas counties after Interstate 57 southbound was closed for several hours due to hazardous weather conditions and multiple crashes.
Emergency vehicles were positioned on I-57 southbound to detour traffic at Exit 203, the Arcola exit, as authorities worked to manage the situation. Illinois State Police responded to multiple crashes near Milepost 190 in Coles County, which officials said were caused by deteriorating weather conditions.
Crews began preparing a detour to redirect southbound traffic while emergency responders assisted motorists and worked to clear the roadway. Drivers were urged to avoid the area if possible and to use alternate routes until the interstate could be safely reopened.
Officials reminded motorists to travel with caution, slow down, and stay alert while driving through affected areas as weather conditions continued to impact road safety.
