Psychology for the public good: Social media and adolescent mental health

On Friday, September 20 at 4 p.m., The public is invited to help welcome Dr. Mitch Prinstein, the Chief Science Officer of the American Psychological Association, to the University of Illinois. The event will be held at the Campus Instructional Facility Auditorium, at

1405 Springfield Ave. in Urbana.

He will be presenting his talk titled, “Social Media and Adolescent Mental Health: The Current Science and Recommendations.” This talk will review the scientific evidence demonstrating that teens’ use of social media is a highly complex question. Dr. Prinstein offers updates to educate parents, inform educators, guide policymakers, and offer reasonable solutions based on what we know so far.

This lecture will conclude with a Q & A session and refreshments. The event is free and open to the public.

C-U Black & African Arts Festival

On Saturday, September 21, join the C-U Black & African Arts Festival at the I-Hotel & Illinois Convention Center, 1900 S. 1st St. in Champaign. Bring your kids to the Alma Room for a day full of activities. From 10:00 a.m. – 2 p.m., enjoy activity stations, face painting, balloons, and an eSports competition. This event is hosted by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Anchor Church, and HMD Academy of Tae Kwon Do.

Dog rescue adoption event
Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group has partnered with Moore’s Rescue Ranch and Vermilion County Animal Shelter for a pet adoption event Saturday, September 21 from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. You can find your newest furry friend at the Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group Champaign office, located at 1608 Broadmoor Dr. in Champaign. Pet vendors will be on site, as well as a raffle.
Fall Touch a Truck event
From 3 – 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 21, head to the Savoy Recreation Center parking lot for Touch a Truck. Come see the huge variety of trucks in the parking lot. This event is free and open to the public.
