CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. (Chambana Today) — Winter weather conditions led to dozens of traffic incidents across the Champaign-Urbana area over the weekend, as snow-covered roads and extreme cold created hazardous driving conditions.
Illinois State Police Troop 7, which covers Champaign County and surrounding communities, responded to 47 incidents between Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening. The calls included 33 motorist assists, 11 property-damage-only crashes, and three crashes involving personal injuries.
State police said the incidents occurred as steady snowfall and plunging temperatures made roads slick and reduced visibility across the region. Troopers spent much of the weekend helping stranded drivers, responding to crashes, and monitoring road conditions.
Across Central Illinois, Illinois State Police responded to more than 250 weather-related calls during the same period, underscoring the widespread impact of the storm system. Officials urged drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid unnecessary travel during severe winter weather.
