CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – July is proving to be a fickle month with this week running the gamut of extreme heat and humidity with heat indexes approaching nearly 110 degrees to week’s end temps in the mid-70s with overnight lows in the mid-50s.

Residents are reminded that a heat advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. CDT Monday, July 15, 2024.  Hot temperatures and high humidity like this are prone to cause illnesses.  Please take extra precautions to avoid becoming sick.

  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Stay in an air-conditioned room
  • Stay out of the sun
  • Check up on relatives and neighbors

When outdoors, the National Weather Service (NWS) offers these tips:

  • Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing
  • Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
  • Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration also offers this advice to outdoor workers:

  • Schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
  • Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
  • Heat stroke is an emergency!  Cal 911.

Partly sunny, with a high near 87. Southwest wind 9 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 7pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 68. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming north northeast in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

WEDNESDAY: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 4pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 81. North wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: A chance of thunderstorms before 7pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 60. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
