CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – July is proving to be a fickle month with this week running the gamut of extreme heat and humidity with heat indexes approaching nearly 110 degrees to week’s end temps in the mid-70s with overnight lows in the mid-50s.
Residents are reminded that a heat advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. CDT Monday, July 15, 2024. Hot temperatures and high humidity like this are prone to cause illnesses. Please take extra precautions to avoid becoming sick.
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Stay in an air-conditioned room
- Stay out of the sun
- Check up on relatives and neighbors
When outdoors, the National Weather Service (NWS) offers these tips:
- Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing
- Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
- Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration also offers this advice to outdoor workers:
- Schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
- Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
- Heat stroke is an emergency! Cal 911.
