Eastern Illinois Foodbank is inviting community members to volunteer at its Volunteer Center in Urbana every Tuesday. Located at 2405 North Shore Drive, the center offers one-hour shifts between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., allowing participants to help sort and prepare food for distribution.
“Participating in ACES Family Academies with my daughter was such a meaningful experience — both as an alum and as a parent,” said Rocky Lacey-Nelson (B.S. ’97), ACES Alumni Board President. “It was incredible to see her curiosity sparked by the same college that shaped my own path. This program creates lasting memories and opens young eyes to the power of learning and discovery. We had a fantastic time last year, and we’re excited to come back!”
Trained personnel will test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors within residents’ homes. Homes lacking these devices will be provided new detectors, free of charge. This initiative aims to significantly reduce the risk of fire-related injuries and fatalities by ensuring that vulnerable households have the necessary early warning systems in place.

With the Summer EBT program, Illinois is ensuring our most vulnerable children have access to the nutritious meals they need to thrive,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “After becoming one of the first states to successfully launch this assistance program last summer, we’re proud to continue investing in the well-being of our children and families.”
A popular Savoy bowling alley and food establishment has been shut down after receiving a red placard from the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District earlier this week, prompting the suspension of its food permit.
This is down from 4.4 percent in March 2024, which is a 1.1 percentage point improvement. In Champaign, the unemployment rate fell from 3.2 from 4.3 percent. In Urbana, the the unemployment rate fell from 3.2 from 4.5 percent. Total nonfarm employment in the Champaign-Urbana area increased by 2,300 jobs year-over-year, reaching 122,900 jobs in March 2025.
The trustees recognized April 2025 as Community College Month, which supports the awareness of the benefits of community colleges. It is part of a national campaign by the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT). The primary goal, according to ACCT, is to “improve awareness of the economic, academic, and equity advantages of attending community colleges, and to dispel longtime stigmas wrongly associated with public two-year colleges.”
Students will also receive personalized support throughout the job application process. Graduates will receive financial support as they transition into the workforce. Telecommunicator positions offer life-supporting wages and do not require a college degree. Classes will run for approximately three hours a day over two weeks. The training is open to community members across Parkland’s District 505 service area. Space is limited.
The officers then transported Sanford-Beasley to the Vermilion County Public Safety Building, booked on charges of being Wanted on a Warrant, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Convicted Felon, Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Obstructing/Resisting a Peace Officer.
The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) issued a standing order allowing people in Illinois to obtain the PrEP, the HIV preventative medication, directly from a pharmacist without requiring a doctor’s prescription. PrEP is one of the most effective means of preventing HIV infection. Studies show that it reduces the risk of infection through sexual transmission as much as 99 percent. The order was signed by signed by IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra and will make it easier to obtain either of the two oral medications used in the PrEP regimen.
